“Yes, you all would have made good Nazis. You would have put on the uniforms, turned your heads, and allowed your friends and neighbors to be persecuted and destroyed. You say it could never happen again, but look how close you came. Threatening those who wouldn’t join you. You asked how could German people do nothing as millions of innocent human beings were murdered.” Mr. Ross, The Wave, p. 139
** SPOILER ALERT **
I think Mr. Ross had a good quote because he proved everyone wrong about the Holocaust not happening again but it did happen again. All of the students had uniform and a Wave band on their arms like how the Nazis would have theirs. The students turned their back on other people who were not in the Wave, just like in WWII how German or Nazis turn their heads on the Jewish people. In the story when a Jewish kid was getting beaten up all members of The Wave turn their back away from that person like nothing was happening. The Wave members did almost everything a Nazi would do during WWII. Nobody in the book would fight against the Wave except Laurie. Other than her, no one would talk back or say anything against the Wave because they have fear towards the Wave. It’s just like how the Germans had fear against the Nazis.
This quote reminds me of WWI and WWII. The reason this reminds me of both wars is that when WWI ended most countries thought that another world war would not happen. However, a few years later another one happened. The Nazis would threaten those who would not become members of the Nazi Party or followers of Hitler’s rules. Most Jews were hated on because they would not wear the Star of David even though they were ordered to by Hitler. And those Jews were despised upon by other Jews. During WWII, neighbors would rat on each other for hiding or helping a Jew. This quote also reminds me how some Germans were bystanders and let that happen. I think Germans had fear of Hitler so they decided to talk back to him because anyone who would go against Hitler would be murdered or sent to prison. The part of the quote where they talk about being a good Nazi in the book the students had everything a Nazi would wear and what a Nazi would do. The students who were part of the Wave had the chants like how a Nazi would chant to his leader.
It's hard seeing the wrong in a group when you want to be part of the group; especially when they become the majority. Laurie sure is being brave. I hope others see what the Wave is causing and will stand up to the people that are doing wrong. Have you ever been with a group of your friends that picked on someone that acted different from them or wasn't part of their group? Did you join in with your friends or did you tell them that they were doing something wrong. Hard thing to do when it could affect your friendship.
