Question: The establishment of ghettos marked the end of freedom of movement for Jews. Write about what freedom means to you in your life and what you think it would mean to lose.
When the Jews got their freedom taken away that must have been so hard for them. In Schindler’s List it showed a wealth family that had to drop everything and move into a ghetto. I think that freedom is very important for everybody and without it people start to lose hope. If I were to lose my freedom I wouldn't know what to do because without freedom what can you do? I wouldn't do anything out of despair and fear. Mostly out of fear because of the Nazis that patrolled the ghettos. I think to lose your freedom is to lose yourself. Without freedom someone tells you who you are and control you the way they want. In The Pianist it showed how the Nazis when up to a family that was eating dinner and the Nazis threw an elderly man in a wheelchair off the building, so I would be terrified of what would happen if I didn't conform to the Nazis. The Nazis took away freedom of the Jews like in May 17, 1934 - Jews were not allowed national health insurance, and Yellow stars required to be worn by Polish Jews over age 10 in November 23, 1939 (http://www.historyplace.com/worldwar2/holocaust/). This limited their freedom slowly but after a few years it majorly affected the Jews. In the ghettos the Nazis didn't want anything to do with the Jews so the Jews had to control themselves with little to no help from the Nazis. Like in The Pianist Wladyslaw’s friend was a Jewish police officer and had to help board them on trains to death camps. I think that freedom is one of the most important qualities that make us human and the ghettos took that away from Jews.
