Fear

“They’re really scared. Not only to say anything against the Wave, but of what might happen to them if they don’t go along with it.” Laurie, p. 124, The Wave

Fear is applied here in this quote. The students are filled with fear of what might happen to them if they don’t join the Wave and follow what everyone else believes in. If any student goes against the Wave they could end up hurt or left out of many things because they aren’t part of the biggest trend. I think that the students in the Wave stay in the group because of their friends and classmates. Their friends and classmates that are in the group criticize anyone who isn’t following along with the group. Bandwagon plays a major role in today’s society, when something becomes popular and a must have, bandwagon controls people to want it and when people don’t have it they are afraid of not being a part of it. If you don’t join people will criticize you for not supporting the cause, problems will most likely arise.

This quote reminds me of Nazi Germany because many Germans knew that the Nazis were bad but out of fear of not going along with the group, and fear of Hitler many Germans joined the Nazi party. And because of this fear the Nazi population grew and more and more power was given to Hitler. As Fashion advances and new and new styles come out people like the way the new style looks and will criticize the old style like its bad or something. When a friend or group of friends plan to do something bad that you don’t want to do you most likely won’t tell them to stop because you have fear of them calling you a chicken or being laughed at. Do you ever have a feeling of fear of a group if you don’t want to go along with them? Why or Why not?

  1. Fear and ignorance Mohammed. You are right on. They can drive humans to do many things that they are later ashamed of doing. Imagine the pressure to be a member of the Nazi movement as it took hold in Germany. We did not have the quick access to information as we do today so maybe you thought you were joining the group that was good, focused on positive goals and later you come to find you have to do terrible things to stay in the group.
