Go Against the Wave?!

“The Wave was scary. Oh, it was just great if you were an unquestioning member. But if you weren't...” Laurie, pg 91, The Wave.

I completely agree with this quote. It’s showing that if you like the Wave then you're completely fine but if you disagree with the Wave then there will be consequences. I think that this isn't a group any more it’s more like a dictatorship with Ben Ross as their leader. Later in the book it talks about kids being bullied into joining the Wave, so the Wave escalates and gets worse and worse for the people that are not in the group. I was wondering if Ben Ross has gone mad with the power of the Wave and will never want to stop it. I was also thinking that if he doesn't want it to end what will happen to the school? If Ben doesn't stop I think that he will get fired from teaching. I was really surprised about how many people have joined the Wave and are so devoted to it.

The quote reminds me of what it must have been like to be in Nazi Germany during the war. If you were good with the Nazis controlling everything and killing many innocent people you were fine, but if you were against it you would probably be put in prison or even killed. The Wave is exactly like how the Nazis rose to power - they started as a group and then when people saw that they were wrong it was already too late. I can also relate this to a book we read in literature called Riding the Tiger. In that book a little kid is pressured into “riding the tiger” which was representing a gang. At first the kid thought it was so fun to ride the tiger, and even when people warned him about how the tiger is bad and the farther you go the harder it is to quit. Finally the little kid saw what the tiger did was wrong but when he tried to get off it was so hard for him to do. This can relate because as Laurie tries to stop the Wave even though its the right thing its hard for Laurie to choose the right thing just like the kid on the tiger, its hard to get off the tiger even though its the right thing to do, and after you do it you “get off the tiger” everything will start to get better.I think that’s what I think will happen with the Wave.
